The first to speak was toxics activist Jim Puckett – founder of the Basel Action Network (BAN) – addressing the serious public health impacts of IT dumping in both China and Africa. He revealed the outright dumping of electronics which has led to dangerous recycling habits, producing frightening toxins entering the water and air, toxins which create fatal health hazards for these highly populated countries. In conclusion, Mr. Puckett asked the important question: "Why should developing countries bear the toxic burden of the world just because they are poorer?"

Baker & Hostetler partner Arthur H. Lundberg followed Mr. Puckett on the legal implications of improperly removing data contained within IT Assets. Mr. Lundberg explained that it is not enough to use a third party to handle disposal, but businesses must conduct adequate due diligence to ensure that the third parties they choose for disposal are legitimate and capable. With FACTA, HIPAA, Gramm-Leach-Bliley and Sarbanes-Oxley all implicated, industry professionals must plan and execute the disposal of IT Assets with the same focus they use when acquiring the new IT Assets.

The Summit concluded with an engaging presentation by International Association of IT Asset Managers (IAITAM) President and Founder Barbara Rembiesa and IAITAM Director of Strategic Development David Keith. Ms. Rembiesa and Mr. Keith asked the attendees poignant questions regarding their IT Asset Management practices. They called upon representatives from KeyBank to share their bank’s protocols and explain how treating IT Asset Management like an integral part of a business is critical for risk management, increased profit and asset optimization.
